What is test automation and who is behind AskUI

..Software tests check software for compliance with defined requirements. One category of software tests is user interface (UI) testing. User interfaces now determine a large part of our everyday lives. This process is called UI testing. If this process is automated, we speak of test automation.

Companies have to constantly test their software from the user’s perspective. Although this could be done manually for a long time, today’s almost daily release cycles and complex user interfaces have massively increased the requirements. This effort can hardly be managed manually, which is why operators are increasingly releasing error-prone software. This leads to frustration for companies and users.

The team developed a first prototype together with the first pilot partners. The main focus of developing this prototype was to prove that it would work. Once this had been confirmed, the question arose: How do you actually create harmonious, user-friendly communication between humans and machines? This is where the Mittelstand 4.0 Usability Competence Center came on board.

Shortly after the AI ​​pilot project was announced, AI trainer Manuel Kulzer from the Usability Competence Center met the three founders online over a “coffee chat”. Looking back, he describes his first contact with the team as follows: “AskUI impressed us with a well-thought-out AI application idea, which had already been partially implemented.”

The framework of the pilot project was defined together. The aim of the study was to test methods for the usability and user experience evaluation of the AI ​​application. An important factor in the user experience of AI assistance systems is collaboration and communication with the AI. Therefore, it should also be examined to what extent the empathetic properties of the AI ​​can influence the building of trust between humans and AI and a positive user experience.

First, two prototypes of the test software were developed as part of A/B testing: an empathetic version that showed more human emotions and expressions and a neutral, purely factual version for comparison. To evaluate the two prototypes, ten user tests were carried out, using both quantitative questionnaires and qualitative interviews. In the questionnaires, users were able to rate on scales whether they found the respective prototype intuitive or whether they found the communication with the specially developed AI mascot “Carl” pleasant.

Carl is the butler who guides the user through the tool and provides information about what is happening when the AI ​​automatically operates the user interface. For example, Carl explains “I’ll take a look at that” when he takes a picture of the application, “give me a moment” when the picture is being examined for elements, or “great, that works perfectly” when a test step was successfully completed. The AskUI team observed the participants’ reactions to the assistant very closely. The founders had the opportunity for the first time to see how outside users reacted to their product. The participants came from a wide range of disciplines and had different previous experiences. A happy side effect of this versatility for the founders was that the participants also pointed out numerous things that went beyond the actual prototype.

But what was the result of the study? The analysis of the questionnaires and interviews showed above all that less experienced software testers preferred the empathetic version. The transparency of the process, which was made possible by the support, was particularly praised. Experienced computer scientists, on the other hand, found the assistant nice, but preferred to receive only technical information. Overall, the project showed that the form of expression of an AI influences the perceived usability and user experience.

Quo vadis, AskUI? What is test automation

What do these results mean for the further development employment in vietnam – facts and statistics in 2024  of the prototype and where does AskUI stand today? A lot can happen to a startup in six months, as the founders have shown.

The team has now moved into office space in Karlsruhe as part of the “CyberLab” accelerator program. Here, the team receives intensive support to advance the product and development. Since January 2021, the team has also been supported by the EXIST Founders’ Scholarship. The scholarship supports innovative start-up ideas in the realization of the project. The scholarship can be interpreted as a groundbreaking indicator of the future viability and potential of an idea. In addition to being anchored in start-up networks, participation in projects such as the evaluation of the Usability Competence Center was of great importance here.

In March of this year, the time had come.  Not least thanks to the excellent support of the study participants and the Usability Competence . Numerous things that even exceeded the actual scope of the project.” Manuel Kulzer also draws a consistently positive conclusion: “Seeing how different people react to such forms of AI design in contrast to neutral and barely perceptible forms and understanding both the strengths and weaknesses of both versions was extremely exciting and educational.”

The AskUI team would like to thank Manuel Kulzer for his intensive support and was happy to stay in touch with him even after the project was completed. Jonas Menesklou concluded by emphasizing that “every young team has to submit its product for evaluation by third parties sooner or later. We were really lucky to have the competence center for this step.”

About AskUI
User interfaces determine our everyday lives. Whether shopping online or simply setting an alarm clock, we interact with buttons, text fields and other elements everywhere. Experienced IT specialists were more likely to favor the neutral version because of the factual and technical language used. The project has shown that the form of expression used by an AI can influence the perceived usability and user experience.
